A Wage Gap Action List for President Obama

The Equal Pay Act was passed 50 years ago – but there’s still a long way to go to make sure women are treated fairly. The President has taken important steps to help close the wage gap, most recently by announcing plans to promote equal pay in the federal workforce. But we can’t stop there. We need to ask the President for stronger policies and aggressive enforcement of equal pay laws. Urge the President to take additional action to help close the wage gap now!

Dear President Obama,

Thank you for your extraordinary leadership on fair pay. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act ensured that women who experience pay discrimination can once again challenge their unfair pay in court, and the steps taken by the Equal Pay Enforcement Task Force have been critically important. But as you know, the work to close the wage gap is far from complete. I am asking you to take the following steps:

  • Sign an executive order to stop federal contractors from retaliating against workers who discuss their own wages.
  • Collect data on the compensation practices of private sector employers to better monitor wage discrimination in the private sector.
  • Develop and implement a strategy that truly makes the federal government a model employer.
